3. The Cookies We Set

• Account related cookies: If you create an account with us then we will use cookies for the management of the signup process and general administration.
• Login related cookies: We use cookies when you are logged in so that we can remember this fact. This prevents you from having to log in every single time you visit a new page.
• Newsletter emailing related cookies: The newsletter is a double opt-in email list. Subscribing does not set a cookie on this site; the address is confirmed by email.
• Consent choice: We store whether you accepted or declined analytics, so that we can respect your choice and so that we know whether to keep a reader identifier on your device.
• Reading analytics: If you accept analytics, we store a random reader identifier on your device: in local storage and in a first-party cookie (mtls_reader_id, kept for one year). It counts you once as a reader across visits and lets us measure returning readership. If you decline, this identifier is deleted and never sent: your reading is still measured, but anonymously, using a server-side value derived from the request and salted with a value that changes every day, so it cannot follow you over time. In both cases we record only active reading time, completion, scroll depth, the referral hostname, campaign source/medium/name, the estimated country, subdivision and city where available, approximate network-location coordinates rounded to one decimal degree, language and device class. We do not store raw IP addresses or full referring URLs in these records.

4. Third Party Cookies

Our reading analytics are first-party and separate from Google Analytics. They set no third-party cookies; the only thing they put on your device is the reader identifier described above, and only if you accept analytics. If Google Analytics is configured, it loads only after analytics consent and may set its own cookies to help us understand general site usage. Other embedded or account-related services may also set cookies when you use those features; their notices describe their processing.

5. More Information

You can decline analytics without losing access to published posts and stories. Clearing this site's cookies and local storage removes saved preferences such as your theme, your consent choice and the reader identifier; without that identifier your reading is counted anonymously.
